What caught my eye, besides the beauty of the horses and carriages, is both these photos were (presumably) taken either in the U.S. or in the U.K. Both photos courtesy of Library of Congress
Walter Winans was apparently something of a renaissance man. Born of U.S. parents in St. Petersburg, Russia, he lived in England. He bred racing trotters, and drove in at least some of his own races. Winans also competed in two Olympic Games (marksmanship), and had success in the art world as a painter and sculptor.
A troika outside of Russia is not something I come across, when searching through old horse photos. The horses look so beautifully kept.
Do the photos make you want a troika? (Tasteful tassels. I’m in!)
